Rita Zahara

Rita Zahara is a bi-lingual television news presenter, anchor and producer who also has extensive news reporting experience. Concurrently she is a scholar and PhD candidate at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, researching crisis and counter-terrorism with a nexus to the media.

Rita's most recent television work in the Malay language, involves the production, scripting and presentation of two eight-part series on the best of Singapore ("Yang Ter"), screened on MediaCorp's Suria channel. In addition to conceiving the series, Rita was seen as the ideal "face" for this critically-acclaimed production. She has had a high media profile since her early teens and yet remains extremely approachable within the Malay / Muslim community, both in her home country and throughout Asia.

Rita is equally comfortable in English. During 2008 she presented SportsCenter on ESPN to countries across Asia, also filing sports reports for ESPN's sister channel Star Sports. This extended Rita's profile through South-East Asia, appealing not only to Malay / Muslims but also to the local and cosmopolitan viewers to the north through China and west to the Indian sub-continent. She is also a stringer for Nadi Arena, Astro and a voice talent for HBO Malaysia.

Prior to these ventures, Rita was a bilingual news anchor, presenter, reporter, producer and writer for MediaCorp's Channel NewsAsia (a pan-Asian news channel), Channel 5 and Suria. She has also produced current affairs series that have been viewed on a variety of other channels in other countries. When Singapore hosted international events, Rita was responsible for planning the extent of news coverage at MediaCorp, while simultaneously managing strategic crisis contingency planning, leading the news team in handling crisis and other security-related issues guarding against political unrest, terrorist attacks, violence and other unforeseen circumstances. Specific experience in this area includes managing the IOC meetings, the 2005 & 2006 Singapore National Day Parades, the 2006 Singapore General Elections and the 2006 IMF-World Bank meetings.

Rita was recently appointed as a member of the Publications Consultative Panel, Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts and contributes to Mendaki's Community Leaders Forum, aimed at enhancing Malay/Muslim standings in education, youth, employability and family. She is also heavily involved in humanitarian work for Muslim communities in Asia specifically with US-AID in Pakistan and several countries in South-east Asia, empowering the access of women and children to education.
