Fees: S$22

The esteemed first wife of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w, Khadijah (r.a) was born in 556 AD. Her father was Khuwaylid ibn Asad and mother was Fatimah Bint Zai'dah. Both her parents shared a common ancestor (Ghalib ibn Fihr) with the Prophet s.a.w. Ghalib ibn Fihr was the Prophet's great grandfather 10 generations back.

She grew up in an illustrious family and became a woman with great character.

As a grown woman, Khadijah (r.a) devoted her attention to the business that she had inherited from her father. She was a successful business woman in a male dominated society, conducting her business with high self-esteem, good morals and integrity.

This was when she heard of Muhammad s.a.w. Muhammad s.a.w was at that time doing business independently. Khadijah (r.a) was attracted by his good qualities and asked if he would deliver her merchandise. Muhammad s.a.w agreed. On his return after three months, Khadijah (r.a) proposed marriage. Muhammad s.a.w was 25 and Khadijah (r.a) was 40 when they wedded.

She was the only wife of the Prophet s.a.w during her lifetime. She bore him 6 children, 2 boys and 4 girls.

Khadijah (r.a) was the first person to embrace Islam when the Prophet s.a.w received his first revelation. She was a pillar of support to the Prophet and would help, defend and protect the Prophet s.a.w from the threats of Quraish unbelievers.

The Prophet s.a.w held the greatest love and regard for Khadijah (r.a). Even after her death, he remembered her fondly. He said, “When all others opposed me, she supported me. When all were infidels, she embraced Islam. When none was my helper, she helped me.

Khadijah (r.a) was a hardworking and honest woman, and her pure heart, generous persona and selfless dedication was exemplary. She conducted her business diligently and full of integrity. She was a role-model for woman then, and till today, she is a role-model for Muslimahs all over the world. Her values and character are of the highest order, and something we should all try to learn and emulate.
