Religion has often been a conduit of values that helps shape the outlook and direction of society. But these values are often interpreted and shaped by a multitude of carriers within a wide variety of social movements and forces, ranging from the conservative to the progressive. Contemporary Muslim thought is seeing an implosion of this contestation, which in some cases, are driving sectarian attitudes responding to a bigger and wider context of rapid social change. This session will explore the roots of these contestations and ask if the notion of “progressive religion” – often touted as a contra to “religious extremism” – ever possible within this uncertain future driven by inter and intra religious conflicts.
