Exploring Distinct Parenting Styles: Tiger parents vs Panda parents
Fees: $10
The Parenting Seminar aims to enlighten parents especially those with young children (pre-schoolers) on effective parenting skills. In this seminar, we will be addressing the topic on two extreme ends of parenting styles – authoritarian and permissive parenting. This is also known as ‘Tiger' parents and ‘Panda' parents respectively.
Tiger parents are the strict, demanding parents who push their child to high levels of achievements using hard methods. While Panda parents encourage their child to follow their own path, with parents supervising more than pushing.
We will discuss how these parenting styles affect disciplining, decision making and security of the children and what are the impact on the child. Should children be given the choice to decide on everyday routines or should parents be the decision maker? When does a parent become overly protective of their children?
Parents will be able to discuss and air their views on these issues with the invited speakers whose areas of expertise include family education, child psychology and parenting in Islam.
Topic 1: “The Art of Disciplining Children”
For the first topic, the speaker will help us understand more on ways and methods of disciplining children at different stages of their lives between being harsh and lenient to them. What does Islam teach us about disciplining children? Can there be a balance to being harsh and lenient when disciplining?
Topic 2: “Being Protective of our Children: When Does it Go Overboard?”
For the second topic, the speaker will share on how parents can ensure the security of their children physically, emotionally and spiritually. With her experience in dealing with children of special needs, she will also touch on how parents can ensure the security of these children. The speaker will also talk about identifying limits in protecting children, signs of overprotecting them and its effects on the child.
Topic 3: “Allowing Children to Decide: When Do Parents Step In?”
In this topic, the speaker will talk about who should be given the choice to decide for the children – parents or the children themselves. She will also share the psychological impacts on the children when children are given the freedom to decide and when parents are the sole decision-makers for them.
