The EIES seeks to provide Impact & Shari'ah Investors & Business owners with knowledge, inspiration and avenues to manage and grow personal funds. This event is targeted at a specific segment of upwardly mobile individuals: discerning and savvy middle-class PMETs and SME owners.
The overriding objective of the EIES it to empower this segment to rise out from the middle income squeeze (stagnant income faced with rising costs) through ethical investing and intelligent and socially-responsible entrepreneurship.
1. Wealth Management Principles for Professionals & Entrepreneurs
Dato' Mohd Fadzli Yusof, founding director of First International Consulting Sdn Bhd, a firm specialising in Islamic finance consulting, training and advisory. Dato' Fadzli retired as the founding Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia's pioneer takaful operator, Takaful Malaysia in 2005. Under his stewardship, assets of Takaful Malaysia grew to RM2.4 billion. He led Takaful Malaysia in 2001 to be the first takaful company listed on Bursa Malaysia.
Dato' was a member of the Board of Trustees of AAOIFI (the international Islamic accounting standards body) and also served the Task Force on Islamic Finance of the Labuan Offshore Financial Services Authority from 2002 to 2005. He is currently a board member of Heitech Padu Berhad, a company listed on Bursa Malaysia, a member of the Islamic Council of Negeri Sembilan and an academic fellow of the University College Insaniah, Kedah.
2. Ethical Considerations in Wealth Management
Tn Wan Zamri is an Associate of the Malaysian Institute of Insurance and holds a Masters in Islamic Banking and Finance (Msc). He had previously served as an Advisory member on Islamic Banking and Takaful for the Labuan Offshore Financial Services Authority and has more than thirty years of experience in the industry.
Tn Wan Zamri was the first CEO of Asean Retakaful International (L) Ltd, and was also the CEO of Syarikat Takaful Indonesia. He left Takaful Indonesia in 2007 to help set-up a new takaful company, Dar Al Takaful and was later appointed as its first CEO until 2010. Wan Zamri is currently a Consultant with First International Consulting Sdn Bhd and is pursuing a PhD from the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC), International Islamic University Malaysia. He co-authored a book titled, ‘Fundamentals of Takaful' published by Islamic Banking and Finance Malaysia (IBFIM) in 2011.
3. Legal Considerations - Business and Investing Fundamentals
Mr Abdul Rahman is an Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore. He runs his own Law Firm – Abdul Rahman Law Corporation.
Rahman actively engages in a wide array of practice areas. His key areas of concentration cover:-
•personal and commercial dispute resolution including civil litigation;
•general commercial/corporate advisory work (including tax planning) tailored towards small and medium enterprises;
•family and Syariah law matters (which include matrimonial and probate advice);
•drafting of Nazars, Hibahs and Syariah compliant wills;
•a conveyancing practitioner for the past three (03) years; and
•specific areas of criminal work when requested.
With regards to Family Law, Rahman concentrates on Syariah Law Practice and he has successfully argued cases before the Appeal Board of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore on various occasions. He also volunteers on the Legal Committee of the Muslim Convert's Association of Singapore and he is an Executive Committee Member of the Association of Muslim Lawyers. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Muslimin Trust Fund Association.
4. Startup Expansion - Scaling up to your first Million
Mr Mohd Nor (Kino), owner of Amani Group. He is an inspiring Entrepreneurship figure, who overcame all odds as a former drug-offender to now owner of one of the largest Malay-owned Wedding Catering and Décor Company, with revenue surpassing $1million since 2011. Mr Mohd Nor was awarded the Yellow Ribbon Award by SCORE in Certificate of Merit Achievement in 2011 followed by SME ONE ASIA Award in 2012 and was featured in a book - The Business Gurus 2013 Singapore - My First Chair.
5. Entrepreneurship & Real Estate Investing - Synergizing for Success
Mr Ismail Gafoor is the founder and CEO of Propnex, Singapore's largest Real Estate Company and a renowned entrepreneur and investor.
Under his guidance, PropNex property consultants won over 70% of the Awards in the Institute of Estate Agents Awards for 2003. In 2004, he clinched both the SMCCI Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the Spirit of Enterprise Award. In 2008, he went on to win the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises' Top Entrepreneur of the Year and Overall Entrepreneur for eCommerce Awards, along with the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Overall Indian Entrepreneur of the Year Award (Large Enterprise).
6. Real Estate Crowdfunding - Sharing in Development Profits
Mr Umar Munshi is the founding director of Ethis Pte Ltd (Singapore) and partner at PT Ethis Indo Asia (Indonesia), and Head of Investor Relations at Club Ethis – the world's first Shari'ah-compliant Real Estate Crowdfunding Platform. He is also a partner at Amanah Asset Management, a firm specialising in Islamic Finance Consultancy and Events.
Mr Munshi has been immersed in Islamic Finance for three years, focused on creating market awareness and reaching out to the larger community. Mr Munshi has been an entrepreneur since the age of 18, and has developed startups in F&B, Healthcare, Technology and Education in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
At the age of 23, he was recognised as a nominee for the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award by the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce. His strength is in developing marketing concepts and innovations in new and emerging market niches.
