In the Name of the Divine the Most Merciful the Most Kind
SMU Islamic Business & Finance Society presents:
Distinguished Visiting Scholar Series by Imam Afroz Ali.
Lecture: Economy, Poverty & The Consumer Market: Islam's Proposition for Solutions
Poverty is a complex phenomenon. On the one hand it has persisted for many around the worldin varied degrees in societies and communities around the world since recorded history, regardless of resource endowment, the stage of development, level of technology, social structure or culture. On the other hand, the GDP-based economy, driven by production and consumption, indicates wealth and prosperity for others.
This seminar seeks to explore the reality of poverty, wealth and prosperity, and how some of Islam’s heritage of Endowments, Wealth Transfer and Frugality has innovative solutions for the modern world. These traditional IslamicModels were able to solve the problems of poverty and provide much needed social services to the poor in the past. Given the pervasiveness of poverty in Muslim countries, it is important to investigate how these institutions can be used in contemporary times to alleviate poverty in the global world.
