The Critical Muslim - Navigating the Media Cloud
We are constantly faced with various forms of media content, all part of a large and almost inescapable "media cloud".
Increasingly, we may be at the risk of media "illiteracy" - subconsciously, we believe all that we read, hear or watch with an uncritical perspective. Examples include the emotional responses by some Muslims at the global coverage of several events that seemed to portray Muslims negatively or offend Muslim values - the recent Swiss minaret ban referendum, banning of hijabs in certain countries, the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims - the list goes on. But media coverage of an event may not necessarily reflect the actual socio-political context of the event.
How do we then critically analyse information in a thoughtful and meaningful manner? How can we consume media without compromising our Muslim values?
Join us in a lively discussion with 2 speakers who will share their insights on Islam and the inner workings of the media.
