parenting talk, social media

Fees: $15 per individual, $25 per couple

According to SocialMediaToday, the average person will spend nearly two hours (approximately 116 minutes) on social media every day, which translates to a total of 5 years and 4 months spent over a lifetime. This time spent is only expected to increase as social media platforms continue to develop with more added features. Unlike other tech trends, usage of social media does not only affect young users, the number of users age 30-49 are also increasing and expected to grow in number.

The term “sharenting” is a term used to describe the overuse of social media by parents to share content based on their children's lives. One study estimated that the average time it takes parents to share their newborns' first photo on a social media site is 57.9 minutes. Starting from the 1st hour of life, children's lives are being documented on social media. There is growing debate on how sharenting might affect the child's wellbeing and family life.

As parents we might be excited to document and share important milestones online, but what are the consequences of sharing these moments to the public? Are we putting the child at risk, if not in the present, but in the future? Are we invading the child's privacy without realizing it?

Overall, this seminar will help parent to identify prospects of social media in the upbringing of their children and identity challenges and how to address it effectively.
