DeenTight - Bridging Music, Faith & Tradition
Alhamdulillah, SimplyIslam.sg is organising a discussion entitled "Bridging Music, Faith & Tradition". The discussion will include excerpts of a documentary film produced by Tabah Foundation entitled "DeenTight", which was directed by an American film-maker, Mustafa Davis. The discussion will include the Film Director Mustafa Davis, and a visiting scholar, Ustadh Usama Canon. The event promises to be an engaging event, Insha'Allah, with anticipated lively discussions with Bro Mustafa Davis and Ustadh Usama Canon, and the participants.
Synopsis
While there are differences of opinions on the application of music in Islam, many scholars like Imam Nawawi, Qadhi Abu Bakr, Imam al-Ghazali, etc expressed a favourable opinion of music, provided it is within the usage limitation of virtuous areas. Many American and European Islamic musical personalities and groups have mushroomed over the recent years, sharing the message and beauty of Islam through singing, hip-hop, rap and poetry like Yusuf Islam, Sami Yusuf, Maher Zain, Aashiq Al-Rasul, Native Deen, etc. They represent one faith but a spectrum of cultures. Bro Mustafa Davis will share his experience as a film director of the popular documentary DeenTight. The documentary brings to the screen the untold story of Western Muslims struggling to find a balance between their culture and their religion. Filmed on location with Muslim rappers, DJs, slam poets, breakdancers and a graffiti artist in concerts, recording studios, at homes and in the streets, the documentary focuses on the perceived conflict between traditional religious ideals and modernity, as well as both the positives and negatives of Western Pop culture on todays' Muslim youth. Ustadh Usama will expound on his experience as an American on the Islamic music scene in USA, and share his knowledge as an Islamic scholar on the subject of youth and music in Islam and the Islamic thought on the subject.
