Urs (Haul) of Shaykh Muhammad Salih
Resting amidst the hustle and bustle of Singapore's famed Chinatown is a forgotten Muslim pioneer of 19th century Singapore.
Renowned as a Gnostic [al-'arif bi-Llah - العارف بالله] and recognised as a Saint [wali Allah - ولي الله], he is Khwaja Muhammad Salih (d. circa 1830) - the first Imam of one of the oldest mosques in SG, Masjid Jamae (Chulia) @ South Bridge Road.
It is said that from amongst his peculiarities he used to bathe in boiling water. He is reported to have died at the time of some Indo-Chinese riots so his burial was deferred. But his body contravened natural laws and remained incorrupt.
A mausoleum was thus erected for him in the graveyard adjoining the Masjid. Such is his continuing miraculous exploits that while all the graves around him have been exhumed, he remains interred in the same spot almost 200 years later.
Amongst his illustrious contemporaries were:
* Al-Imam Al-Faqih Haji Abdul Jalil (d. 1827)
* Al-Shafi'i Al-Qawrawani (d. 1837)
* Al-Shaikh Dawud al-Istakhri (d. 1839)
* Al-Habib Sayyid Umar al-Junaid (d. 1952)
* Al-Habib Sayyid Nuh al-Habshi (d. 1866)
Come join us on Saturday, 28th May 2016, for a "Gathering of Goodness [majlis al-khair] to remember the life of this pious Man of Allah who, despite his desire for obscurity, continues to be a focal point in the lives of many Muslims in SG.
