Tawassul or intercession or seeking nearness to Allah is indeed permissible as explained through sources from the Qur'an and hadith or Prophetic traditions. In Surah Al-Maidah of the Holy Qur'an, Allah orders:
“O you who believe! Be careful (of your duty to) Allah and seek means of nearness to Him and strive hard in His way that you may be successful.” (Al-Qur'an 5: 35)
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah related through a rigorous chain of narrators from 'Uthman ibn Hunayf that “A blind man came to the Prophet and said, 'Please pray to Allah for me that He may heal me.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “If you wish I will pray [for you], but if you are patient, it is better for you.” The man said: “Pray to Him”. The Prophet directed him to make a meticulous ablution (wudu), and then make the following supplication: “O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through my Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of Mercy; O Muhammad, I seek your intercession with my Lord for my need, that it may be fulfilled. O Allah, grant him intercession for me”.
The sources of Islam are replete with injunctions from the Qur'an and Prophetic traditions that concerns tawassul. Shaykh Ahmad Saad will discuss the concept of tawassul or intercession, and will expound on the permissible ways of seeking nearness to Allah, and share some of the legal opinions on this subject.
