Sabr literally means enduring and patience. Allah exhorts patience: “Seek help in patience and prayer” (Quran 2:45), “Endure, vie with each other in endurance” (Quran 3:199), etc. Similarly Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):

“How remarkable a believer's affair is, for it is always to his advantage, and such a condition is only for a believer. If something good happens to him he thanks God, which is to his advantage; if something bad happens to him he endures it, which is also to his advantage.”

There are various kinds of patience; patience in enduring difficulty or calamity, or patience in obedience by being steadfast in performing regular acts of worship, or patience in refraining from acts of disobedience, or patience and showing no haste in realising hopes or plans, and patience in good fortune by manifesting gratitude to Allah. The believer must constantly strive for the attainment of peace within himself in order to achieve patience. The approach in facing each calamity must always be made in reference to his/her relationship with Allah and mankind.

Shaykh Ahmad Saad will discuss the deeper meaning of patience, and share some glimpses on the patience borne by various Islamic scholars of the past in pursuing their struggles in scholarship and sharing the beauty of Islam, and the lessons we can draw from them.
