MAQASID OF LOVE: UNDERSTANDING THE HIGHER OBJECTIVES OF MARRIAGE IN ISLAM

Love is a precious gift from Allah s.w.t granted to His beloved servants. The feelings of love and affection imparted into the hearts of women and men symbolize His mercy to his creations. He created women and men and allows for deep affections to be developed between them. It is a natural inclination or fitrah for one to love on another. This is the natural disposition that He had planned for His servants. It is through this feeling of love and affection that one seeks to establish solace and tranquility in life.

In fulfilling this natural inclination, the institution of marriage is built upon as the foundation for love and affection to be developed between a woman and man. Marriage is a sacred vow taken by two individuals in fulfilling a spiritual duty. It is a means to an end, and not an end in itself. The higher objective of marriage is beyond achieving a worldly objective in this temporal life, but to attain His mercy for the eternal abode of the afterlife. Marriage therefore serves not only the needs of humanity in this world but marriage also serves the purpose and objectives of their existence in relation to their spirituality.

In understanding the objectives (maqasid) of the Islamic law (Shariah), Imam Al-Ghazali categorically listed the five fundamental objectives the Shariah, where it seeks to protect the faith, life, intellect, lineage and property. Marriage effectively aims to fulfill these five fundamental objectives by regulating the freedom to love within the framework that is blessed by Allah s.w.t, the Master of Love. The Shariah seeks to find equilibrium in balancing this freedom to love with other essential objectives, namely the welfare of the family, societal needs and spiritual commitment.

This two-hours interactive talk will address the essential question of the meanings of love and its importance in Islam. It is important to know how one can express deep appreciation on the most beautiful things that God created on this earth – the feelings of love and affection. The two esteemed speakers will discuss the objectives of marriage and how it fulfills the five fundamental objectives in the Islamic law. The speakers will also share on the wisdom of marital values learnt from the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w's examples and deliberate on how marriage will not only fulfill one's physical needs but also function as means to achieve the ultimate goal of eternal bliss.
