Lecture Synopsis - "Love of the Nation is from Faith"

There is a famous Arabic and Islamic saying, “hubb al-watan min al-iman”, which means “Love of the Nation is from Faith”. Some have attributed the saying to be a Prophetic tradition as well (Imam Al-Ajluni's Kashf al-Khafa').

The hadith or saying encourages Muslim believers to work hard in achieving material benefit for their respective homelands. It urges them to make progress in every field of knowledge in order to sustain their lives and progress the communities.

However, there are Muslims who think that one has to choose between being a Muslim or a citizen of a country, as if being a Muslim and a citizen were two mutually exclusive conditions or state of a human being.

In fact, loving one's nation or country, and feeling this connection to the land is actually part and parcel of Islam. The history of Islam, through the biography and Prophetic traditions clearly indicated the Prophet's love for his birth country, Makkah, and also his love and attachment to the city of Madinah, where he later migrated to.

Allah mentioned in the Holy Qur'an (Quran 11:61), “He brought you forth from the earth and established you therein”. The speaker will elucidate on the above topic, with references to verses from the Holy Qur'an and Prophetic traditions, and discuss the need for Muslims to give wholeheartedly their love to the land, and to build their communities therein.

About the Speaker

Sheikh Ahmad Muhammad Saad Ash-Shafi'ie Al-Azhari Al-Hasani was born into a family of scholars whose lineage goes back to the Prophet (salla Allahu alayh wa sallam) through Sayyidna Al-Hasan ibn Ali (radiaAllahu anhu) in the northern Egyptian governorate of Monofiyyah, in the Nile Delta. Many great scholars of Islam have come from this governorate including people like Shaykh Al-Islam Ibrahim Al-Bayjouri, Imam Tajuddin As-Subki and Taqiyuddin As-Subki, Shaykh Al-Islam Ash- Shanawani and many others. also focused on Qira'aat and, by the grace of Allah, Sheikh Saad got Ijazah in the narrations of Hafs and Shubah from Asim, Warsh and Qaloon from Nafi' and Khalaf and Khallad from Hamzah in addition to many other Tajweed texts.
