Islam and Modernity: Some Preliminary Caution
Fees: FREE! But certainly worth more than that!
Synopsis of talk:
Muslims of today are inundated with the idea that not only is Islam compatible with modernity but that Islam is actually a modern religion. Probably as a reaction against the perceived idea that Islam is old-fashioned, backward and is even the reason why Muslims are behind in terms of science and technology, many of us readily describe al-Islam as a modern advanced religion. Some took pains to convince others and themselves that Islam advocates modernity and is sophisticated. We are even urged to “ride the wave of modernity” so that we can catch up with progress and changes of the 21st Century. Little do we realise that doing so is really taking the western standards of progress and development as a yardstick to measure and evaluate Islam and thereby subjecting Muslims to such measures. Indeed, while we are trying to play catch up to be modern, the western intellectuals have already explored post-modernism and beyond. This talk is an attempt to clarify Modernity and Modernisation as concepts emanating from the western worldview and how from the Islamic perspective Muslims should respond to the call to embrace modernity.
